The next evening, Grant picked her up outside her building in Brooklyn, and the moment Emma saw him her carefully rehearsed speech about keeping things casual evaporated.

He was wearing dark jeans and a navy sweater that somehow made his eyes look like pieces of the sky, and he was holding a single white tulip, which he handed to her with a slightly nervous smile.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

Emma had chosen a simple green dress and her favorite leather jacket, with ankle boots that gave her a few extra inches of height, and the way Grant was looking at her made her feel like she’d spent a month deciding on the outfit instead of fifteen minutes.
