Elias Reed rose first, and he did not walk so much as swagger.
He swept his hand across the room as he spoke, painting a picture of a grieving family clinging to sentiment while civilized law moved forward on paper. The land, he argued, had been legally sold to the Cornwall Railroad Company. A signed contract existed. There was nothing to dispute.
When he finished, he adjusted his vest, smiled at the gallery as though he had just swallowed a canary, and sat down.
Judge Crane turned his heavy gaze to the defense table.
“Your turn, Miss Boon.”
Clementine stood. Her hands trembled slightly — she let them. No one was convinced by fake courage; what mattered was what she did with the tremble.
“Your honor, this is not a dispute about land. It is a dispute about a lie.”
