Widowed Mother Sheltered an Old Cowboy — Next Day, His Millionaire Son Rode In With a Shocking Offer
Chapter 2
Kora looked at the blank bank draft. She looked past it at Harlon Croft’s face. He was not sneering. He was not enjoying this. He was simply a man who had learned to see the world as a map of obstacles and acquisitions, and she was currently both.
“And if I refuse?” she said.
“Then the bank forecloses in eleven days and I purchase the land from them for a fraction of what I’m offering you now. You leave with nothing either way.” He said it without pleasure. The absence of pleasure was somehow worse than cruelty would have been. “I’m trying to repay a debt of honor, Mrs. Atwood. I’m offering you a future. Take the number.”
“Harlon.” Silas’s voice came from the doorway — scraped thin by illness but iron at its core. “Lower your hand. Put the book away.”
A flicker of irritation crossed Harlon’s face. “Father, go inside. You’re unwell. I’m handling this.”
“You’re handling it like a cattle buyer.” Silas gripped the doorframe and pushed himself fully upright. His breathing was labored, but his eyes were sharp as filed steel. “This woman dragged me from the ice. She fed me what little she had. You don’t repay a life by threatening to demolish the home it was saved in.”
“I’m saving her from ruin.” Harlon gestured at the sagging porch roof without looking at it. “Look at this place. The wood is rotting. The pantry’s bare. Her husband is dead. What future does the boy have here? I’m offering her a way out.”
