For a long moment, none of us moved inside that small, shadowed room, and the only sound that reached my ears was the soft bubbling of the spring in the next room, as though the water itself were holding its breath right along with us.

I knelt down beside the rusted lockbox, and I traced my thumb across the paper, across the familiar, beloved slant of Jake’s handwriting, and for one terrible, tender second I could almost hear his voice warning me out of the darkness.

“Mom, why would Dad tell us to run?” Noah asked, and his small voice wobbled in a way that made my chest ache all the way down to my bones.
