Chapter 2

The storm hit with the concussive force of an avalanche.

One moment, the world was a frozen, moonlit landscape. The next, it was a churning, shrieking void of white. The wind tore through the canyon like a living thing, a deafening roar that swallowed the shouts of the cowboys and the terrified bellowing of two thousand head of cattle. Within minutes, visibility dropped to zero. The world had been entirely erased, replaced by a blinding, suffocating whiteness that pressed against the eyes like a physical weight.

Martha was thrown against the side of the chuck wagon as the mules panicked, rearing violently in their traces. She grunted, her heavy frame absorbing the impact that would have cracked a smaller woman’s ribs. Her fingers found the reins in the dark, and she pulled with all her massive strength, keeping the wagon from tipping over.

“Hold steady! Hold!” she roared, her voice booming from her deep chest, cutting through the shrieking wind like a blade.

Through the blinding wall of snow, a rider emerged. Sam. His horse was practically sideways against the gale, its eyes wild with terror, its breath coming in ragged, steaming gusts.

“Martha!” he screamed, his voice barely carrying over the roar. “The herd is scattering! Ezra’s down — his horse spooked and rolled on him. His leg is shattered!”

“Where are the others?”
