They Mocked Their Elder Sister For Being Unmarried… Until A Mysterious Duke Approached Her At The..
Chapter 2
Elara Whitmore had not always been invisible.
At twenty-two, she had moved through the halls of Whitmore Manor with a lightness in her step that made servants smile. She played piano in the evenings beside open windows while summer air carried the scent of roses through the corridors. During dinners, she had spoken freely about philosophy and poetry, often surprising her father’s guests with the sharpness of her mind. Men had asked for introductions. Women had complimented her gowns. Her mother had once looked at her with something resembling pride.
That was before Thomas Everly.
Thomas had arrived at the estate as an assistant to a visiting professor, invited by Lord Reginald for discussions about agricultural investments. He was not a nobleman. He owned no title, no fortune, no estates. But he carried something more dangerous than wealth — he carried genuine kindness.
Their first conversation lasted nearly two hours beside the library fireplace. Thomas spoke about music with the same passion he spoke about justice. He listened to Elara’s opinions as though they mattered. He treated every servant with the same respect he showed Lord Reginald.
By the second week, they were exchanging books. By the third, Elara found herself waiting each afternoon for his visits, her heart racing at the sound of his footsteps in the corridor.
