The first shot caught the window before Caleb could answer, and the room dissolved into a roar of breaking glass and frozen wind.
He hit the floor on top of Eliza, one arm locked around her shoulders, his weight pressing her into the cold boards. Snow poured through the shattered frame. The fire guttered. Beyond the wall of white, a horse stamped and a man shouted an order she couldn’t understand.
“Stay down,” Caleb said against her ear.
She was already trying to rise, blankets tangled around her legs, her heart slamming so hard she felt it in her throat.
“There are four of them—”
