A soaked puppy slipped into a police officer’s home during a blizzard—then bolted back into the storm and led his K9 to a woman buried beside a wrecked SUV

Chapter 2

I came back with a dry towel and a small bowl of food, and I didn’t get close. Ranger had taught me something in that hour of waiting — reaching too fast only pushes a frightened animal back into hiding. So I placed the towel on the floor first, then the food, and I backed away. The puppy looked at the bowl, his nose lifting. Hunger and fear fought a brief war in those wide eyes. Then I shifted, and he stepped backward until his shoulder touched Ranger’s leg.

“All right. Your rules.” I moved to the sofa and sat on the edge of it.

Ranger looked at the food, rose, and walked to his own bowl near the kitchen. He ate several bites without hurry, drank some water, and did not look at the puppy once. The little dog watched every movement. Finally he stepped forward — one paw, then another — reached the bowl, sniffed, and took a small bite. Nothing happened. He ate again. Within a minute, caution had lost its fight with hunger, and he was eating fast enough that I had to slide the bowl away for a moment.

“Slow down.”
