Dr. Miller recovered first, his face reddening as he pointed a trembling finger at me. “This proves nothing! A trained dog can sit even when rabid. The incubation period alone—”
“His tongue is purple.”
I cut him off without looking away from Valor. The dog’s thoughts were getting clearer now that he was sitting still. The woman understands me. She really understands me. I’m not going to die. I’m not going to die.
“Rapid breathing, constricted pupils, abnormal salivation, tongue discoloration, front paw tremors.” I ticked them off on my fingers. “These aren’t rabies symptoms, Dr. Miller. They’re textbook signs of organophosphate poisoning. Which means someone put something in his food.”
“Ridiculous! The Young Master’s dog is fed from the Whitfield kitchen. The same food the family eats. Are you suggesting someone in the kitchen is a poisoner?”
