The Mafia Boss Opened His Door to a Freezing Dog—What Happened Next Melted His Heart
Chapter 2
The private hospital’s corridors were paved in polished stone, and the antiseptic smell was so strong it burned the back of Damon’s throat. He had chosen this place because money spoke here — a single phone call had scrambled the night staff into motion, and his mother was rushed past the waiting room without a single form signed. But as he stood outside the glass doors of the emergency room, watching the doctors slide IV needles into her paper-thin arm, he understood that money couldn’t protect him from what was coming.
The doctor emerged nearly an hour later. He pulled down his mask with the practiced gravity of a man who had delivered bad news too many times to rush through it.
“Mr. Cross,” the doctor said, keeping his voice low. “Your mother’s condition is severe. Not from a single event, but from prolonged neglect. She is severely malnourished. Her body is depleted of nearly every essential nutrient. Her blood sugar was dangerously low. She has a chronic heart condition that should have been managed with daily medication — but from her blood work, it’s clear she hasn’t taken her medicine in a very long time.”
Damon said nothing. The words were landing, but somewhere distant, like stones dropping into a deep well.
“And there’s something else,” the doctor continued, hesitating. “The confusion, the disorientation, the failure to recognize familiar faces — these are signs of cognitive decline that has progressed through multiple stages without any medical intervention. If it had been caught early, the progression could have been slowed. But at this point…”
