She won the argument. Elara Wren had a way of winning arguments without actually raising her voice — she simply kept talking until the universe surrendered out of exhaustion, and Cassian, who had negotiated treaties with warlords, found himself climbing into a hot bath like a defeated army. Warm water swallowed his aching muscles. Lavender foam covered black fur. And Elara, kneeling beside the tub with a bar of soap in one hand, conducted a cheerful one-sided conversation as though he were an old friend she had known her entire life.
“Honestly,” she said, scrubbing a knot out of his ruff, “you’re lucky I found you. Another day out in that storm and you’d have frozen solid. Don’t give me that look. You’re being bathed, it’s not a tragedy.”
The wolf made a sound that might have been a growl and might have been a groan.
“You know what?”
