Margaret’s voice came through the gap in that careful, measured tone she used when she was certain she wasn’t being overheard.

“She won’t sign willingly. We’ve established that.”

Richard’s voice followed, lower, unhurried. “Then we don’t need her to sign willingly. We need her signature. There’s a difference.”

“And if she goes to an attorney?”

“She won’t have time.”

A pause. The sound of papers being moved.

“The transfer needs to happen before Gerald deteriorates further,” Richard said. “Once he’s gone and she’s contesting it in court, it becomes a mess. But if she signs now, and then disappears before she can retract it—”

“Disappears,” Margaret repeated.
