She Was Dared to Kiss a Masked Stranger at the Royal Ball… Then the Most Feared Duke Claimed Her
Chapter 11
Later, when the hall had emptied and dusk settled over the hills, Sienna stood at the balcony overlooking the vast stretch of northern territory. The air was cold and clean, carrying the scent of pine and distant stone. The horizon burned gold and violet, and the land below lay dark and powerful, waiting.
Brandon joined her without ceremony.
“You have changed everything,” she said quietly.
“No,” he replied. “You have.”
She turned to face him. “Do you regret that I kissed you?”
He considered the question with rare honesty. “Regret?” A slow shake of his head. “No. And if I had not, I would have found another reason.”
Her breath caught slightly. That was as close to confession as he would ever come.
She thought of everything she had lost — her reputation, her friends, her old life. And she thought of everything she had gained — a purpose, a partner, a place in a world that would never have accepted her as merely ornamental. She had been a woman who kissed a stranger on a dare. She had become a woman who shaped the future of the entire North. The transformation had cost her, but standing here, with his hand over hers and the vast territory stretching before them, she understood that some costs were not losses. They were investments in a future she had never imagined possible.
He rested his hand over hers where the raven ring gleamed in fading light.
“Three seconds,” he said softly. “That is all it took.”
“To begin a war?”
“To find my equal.”
Below them, the North stretched strong and unbroken. Feared, perhaps. But protected. And for the first time since that reckless dare, Sienna did not feel like a woman who had stumbled into danger. She felt like one who had chosen it. Chosen him. Chosen power.
The Duke of Ravenshire, once the most feared man in the kingdom, did not look away when she met his gaze. He never had.
She leaned in and kissed him again — not on a dare this time, not for laughter, not for rebellion. She kissed him because he was hers, and she was his, and the world they had built together was worth every cost.
When she pulled back, his eyes were dark and warm and utterly unguarded.
“I love you,” she whispered.
He said nothing for a long moment. Then his hand came up to cup her face, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw.
“I know,” he said, and the smile that touched his lips was the first real smile she had ever seen from him. “I have loved you since the moment you crossed that ballroom floor. I simply did not know it yet.”
The wind carried their voices into the darkening hills, and the North watched over them — silent, vast, and finally at peace.
