She Fell Asleep in an Abandoned Stable—Then the Alpha King’s Pregnant Wolf Curled Around Her, Choosing the Betrayed Woman as Her Future Queen
Chapter 2
The words hung in the library air like frost. For a moment, Sadie thought she had misheard. Then Caius moved.
He did not pace. He did not rush. He did not perform the kind of alarmed efficiency that other men reached for in a crisis. He simply crossed to the table, unfolded a map with the same unhurried precision she was beginning to recognize in everything he did, and pressed his hand to the paper. The Eastern Hold. The pass at Grayrun. The river crossing at Thorn. Three places where a boy could be moved north, or east, or into the frozen waste where no one would ever think to ask.
This was how it worked, he explained, and his voice carried no performance in it at all. The Hold answered to the Eastern Pack Council. That council had been under the Ashevail thumb for four years. A warden named Orvin ran the place — a thin man who had spent his life managing discomfort as a professional practice. He would do whatever held his position. If the Ashvale Alpha ordered the boy moved, Orvin would move him and call it maintenance.
“But there are two things Orvin fears more than the Ashvale Alpha,” Caius said. “The crown. And being late.”
Riders. That was the plan. Not an army, not a siege — three fast men carrying a written order from the Alpha King of the Drave Territories, sealing the Eastern Hold’s records and freezing every transfer of wards pending a formal review. The order would be waiting on Orvin’s desk before the sun rose. And because men like Orvin could smell a shifting power structure the way horses smelled storm on the wind, he would obey it.
“Freezing the Hold keeps Edmund where he is,” Caius said quietly. “It doesn’t free him. To do that, we need what’s in your father’s study.”
