By six o’clock, Ezra Davenport had been dressed for two hours, and the fire in his study had burned down to embers because no one had been there to tend it. He stood at the window with his black coffee gone cold in his hand, watching the frost lay a blue film over the meadow. Somewhere out in that gray, a girl was climbing out of a patched blanket to face a day she had spent the night escaping.
The knock came precisely at six. Doyle, his foreman, a man braided from twenty years of leather and gristle, stamped the snow off his boots on the porch and found his boss waiting with the front door already open.
“You’re up early, Mr. Davenport.”
“I want two things this morning, Doyle. Come sit.”
