Hook Her daughter banned her from the lake house she paid for—then arrived for the Fourth of July and found a stranger living there
Chapter 8
The call came in October.
It was Marcus. His voice was different — heavier, slower.
“Dorothy, I have something to tell you.”
I braced myself. In my experience, calls that started like that only led one direction.
“I’m moving,” he said.
“Moving?”
“My daughter lives in Seattle. She’s pregnant. Twins. She’s asked me to come help her. And I’ve been thinking about it for weeks, and I think I need to go.”
I felt a strange ache in my chest. Loss, yes. But also something else. Relief, maybe. The knowledge that the house was going to be loved by someone who needed it.
“That’s wonderful,” I said. “Marcus, that’s wonderful news.”
“It is. But it means I have to sell the house.”
The words hung in the air.
“I’ve been thinking about it,” he continued. “And I don’t want to sell it to a stranger. I want to sell it to you.”
I sat down. “Marcus, I can’t — ”
“You can. I’m not asking for market value. I’m asking for what I paid. And I’ll give you a year to arrange the financing. I know you have the money from the sale. I know you’ve been careful with it.”
“But you love that house.”
“I do. But I love my daughter more. And I think — I hope — Samuel would understand.”
I was quiet for a long time.
“Dorothy?”
“I’m here.”
“What do you think?”
I looked out my kitchen window. The Atlanta evening was settling in, the sky streaked with orange and pink. The same view I had looked at the night Lorraine called. The same view I had looked at when I decided to make space.
“I think,” I said slowly, “that I would like to come see the house. Tomorrow. With Lorraine and the children.”
“I think that’s a perfect idea.”
I called Lorraine that night. She answered on the first ring.
“Mom, is everything okay?”
“Everything is fine. But I want you to pack a bag. We’re going to the lake house tomorrow.”
“Together?”
“Together.”
There was a pause. Then her voice, soft and uncertain.
“Mom, are you sure?”
“No,” I said. “But I’m willing to find out.”
