The helicopter roared over the ship like a heartbeat, and Amelia shoved the second phone down the back of her waistband beneath her silk blouse just as Bennett’s key scraped the lock.

He smiled at her from the doorway — navy sweater, perfect hair, the devoted husband. “There you are. I was worried.”

“I got sick again.” She let her voice go thin. It wasn’t difficult. The drugs had turned her into a ghost.

Bennett crossed the room and pressed the back of his hand to her forehead. “You’re freezing.”

“I’m fine.”
