The voice cut through the rain like a blade. I didn’t recognize it, but I recognized the effect it had.
Arthur went still. His hands tightened around the mug until I thought the ceramic might crack. Ella drew both hands to her chest, her shoulders folding inward, her whole body shrinking like she was trying to disappear into the chair. Rex rose from beside her feet without a sound — just his ears going sharp, his amber eyes locking on the front door.
I didn’t move fast. I’d learned that lesson the hard way, in places where panic was a gift you gave to the enemy. I walked to the window, lifted the curtain just enough to see, and looked out.
The truck was a gray mud-streaked pickup with a cracked headlight and a dented front bumper. A man stood beside it in the rain, broad and heavy in the shoulders, one hand gripping the gate rail like he owned the road, the storm, and everything in between.
“Who is that?” I asked.
