The assessment room smelled of antiseptic and paper tape. Vera settled onto the examination table with a groan of relief that she tried to hide, and Dr. Nadine Whitaker wrapped the blood-pressure cuff around her arm, keeping her voice light.

“Promise this won’t take long.”

“Dr. Whitaker, I’m eight months pregnant. I’ve been on my feet for thirteen hours, and a retired military dog apparently thinks I’m fascinating.” Vera closed her eyes. “Today stopped making sense around nine a.m.”

Nadine laughed softly. “Fair enough.”

The monitor inflated. Both women waited. The numbers blinked up.
