Dawn came gray and bitter, the sky the color of old steel.
Mason woke to the sound of a woman’s voice, low and patient, speaking through the crack in his window. Olivia Bennett stood beside the truck with her arms wrapped around herself, her chestnut hair pulled into a tight ponytail, her green eyes tired but determined. Behind her, a small boy in a red knitted hat stood with his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets.
“Mason.” Olivia’s breath curled in the cold air. “There’s an empty room inside. No paperwork. No questions.”
He didn’t answer. He couldn’t explain that the walls of Liberty House felt like a grave. So he just shook his head and said, “I’m fine here.”
“You’re freezing.”
“I’ve survived worse.”
She knew better than to push. She had learned that about him over the weeks — that pushing only made him retreat further. So she placed a folded paper under his windshield wiper and stepped back. At the bottom of the eviction notice, in clean black type, was the name: Holloway Urban Development.
