A widower rescued a starving German Shepherd with a plastic container trapped on her head—then her strange habit of hiding food began exposing what both of them were afraid to lose.

Chapter 2

Duncan spoke for the first time. “All right,” he said quietly. “No one’s chasing you.”

One ear shifted beneath the plastic. Duncan waited. Snow gathered on his shoulders.

He pulled the multi-tool from his pocket and opened the small cutting blade. The dog saw movement and tensed. Duncan stopped immediately. He rested his hand on his knee. Waited again.

Minutes passed. A man who had once measured time in seconds during operations now sat in an alley, measuring trust by whether a frightened dog chose not to run.

Finally, he moved closer. One foot. Pause. Another. The dog trembled but stayed down. When he reached her, he did not grab her neck. He touched the outside of the container first. She flinched. He withdrew his hand.

“Yeah,” he murmured. “I know.”
