A Widowed Rancher Stopped for a Mother and Baby in the Rain… She Said ‘May We Sleep in Your Barn’
Chapter 2
Mave laid Clara on the bed in the spare room and unwrapped the wet blanket, and the baby looked up at her with the wide, focused attention of a child four months into the world who had decided the world was, on balance, acceptable.
“You,” Mave said quietly, “are entirely too calm.”
Clara considered this and went on being satisfied with her situation. Mave changed her into the dry clothes she had kept in the inner pocket of her bag — the one mercy she had gotten right in all the packing — and wrapped her in a dry blanket, and felt, for the first time in six days of train cars and diligence stages and muddy roads, the specific relief of a person who has been moving and has stopped.
She allowed herself one full minute of it.
Then she heard Jonah in the kitchen, and she thought about a man who had not asked her a single question, and she got up. She was going to help with whatever needed helping with, because that was the only honest currency she had.
