Hours passed. The light through the small window faded from gold to gray to black.
I heard voices outside—Clara’s, sharp and angry, demanding to see me. The sheriff refused. There was shouting, then the sound of a door slamming.
Silence.
I dozed fitfully, dreaming of May, of Sarah, of the long walk from Nebraska. When I woke, weak sunlight was filtering through the window.
Footsteps approached. The sheriff appeared, keys jangling.
“You’re a lucky man, Thorne.”
“What?”
“Got another telegram this morning. They caught the real thief in Casper. Had the horse and the gold. You’re free to go.”
Relief flooded through me so powerfully I thought I might collapse.
The sheriff unlocked the cell. “Mrs. Higgins has been out there all night, refusing to leave. You might want to do something about that woman.”
I walked out into the morning light. The street was empty except for a wagon, and Clara sitting on the seat, May asleep beside her wrapped in a quilt.
When Clara saw me, she didn’t smile. Didn’t cry. Just reached out her hand.
I took it and climbed up beside her.
“Let’s go home,” she said.
And for the first time, the word felt true.
