The drive to the cabin took longer than usual. Snow thickened fast, washing the headlights into tunnels of white. The dog lay on the passenger seat wrapped in a wool blanket, her scarf tucked under her chin. She did not sleep. Every few minutes, Garrett felt her watching him.

The cabin sat twelve miles beyond town, set back from an old ranch road. It was a simple place — a wood stove, a narrow bed, a shelf of tools, a gun safe.
