A Police Officer Brought Home a White Puppy for His Retired K9 — But the Old Dog Rejected Her
Chapter 2
The house outside Kalispel stood quiet beneath the pines, only the porch light burning against the cold. Malcolm had named the puppy on the way — Pearl — because her coat was bright enough to stand out in the dark, because the name felt like the only gentle thing he could offer her after what she had lost.
Samson was waiting in the hallway when the front door opened.
Eleven years old. Black and tan. A retired K-9 who had walked beside Malcolm through more than a decade of night patrols, dangerous searches, and quiet drives home after everyone else had gone to sleep. He rose slowly now, stiff in the joints, ears forward, watching the movement beneath Malcolm’s coat.
“I brought someone home,” Malcolm said.
