A Navy SEAL Inherited His Poor Grandma’s Mountain House — What His Dog Found Shook the Town

Chapter 2

The road to Silver Creek was a wound in the mountainside — narrow, winding, barely wide enough for one vehicle. Gravel gave way to packed dirt, which gave way to frozen ruts that jolted the truck with every rotation of the tires. Dense pines rose on both sides, their branches heavy with snow, their shadows long and dark.

Atlas leaned forward, his nose testing the air through the cracked window. The dog’s posture had shifted from alert to something sharper. More focused. The same posture he used to adopt on patrol, when danger was close but unseen.

“What do you smell, boy?”

A low whine was the only answer.

The road curved sharply along a ridge. To the right, the land fell away into a deep ravine lined with jagged rock and twisted roots. Fallen logs lay scattered in the depths, half-buried in snow. To the left, the mountain rose steep and dark, its face scarred by old mining claims.

Cole slowed as they approached a narrow bridge. The boards were old, warped, held together by rusted nails and decades of neglect. He eased the truck across, the wood groaning beneath the tires. Atlas whined again, softer this time.

Then Cole saw it.
