June Hartwell stood on the porch with her hands tucked into the pockets of a thick wool coat, a small woman with a straight back and a face carved out of endurance rather than comfort. Cole had exchanged exactly four words with her in four years — a nod here, a muttered thanks for a snowplow there. Two people who understood silence better than speech. He stepped aside, unused to company, and she crossed the threshold with the ease of someone who’d decided already that she wasn’t leaving.
