The soup came in two bowls. Pete placed them down with less force than expected and avoided looking directly at Clara. John tore the bread into smaller pieces because Clara’s fingers shook too badly. She thanked him three times before taking a sip.
Then, without finishing her own soup, she bent carefully toward Raina’s bowl, cooling the broth with small breaths.
“For her first,” Clara murmured. “She’s carrying the little ones.”
John watched the dog nudge the bowl but keep her body pressed against Clara’s leg. Raina was hungry — anyone could see that — but she would not eat until Clara stopped trembling.
Something inside John tightened.
