A Mail-Order Bride Arrives to Find Her Groom Dead, Until a Half-Apache Rancher Offers Protection

Chapter 2

The Blackwood Ranch appeared like a mirage in the moonlight—solid timber, stone foundation, larger than Abigail had expected. Not the rough homestead of a man scratching survival from hard ground, but something permanent. Something built to last.

“You seem surprised,” Blackwood said, helping her down from the wagon.

“Thomas described his ranch in detail. He never mentioned yours.”

“Most people in Copper Ridge pretend I don’t exist until they need something.” He lifted her trunks. “It’s easier that way.”

An older woman emerged from the house—Native American, silver threading through her black braid, eyes sharp as broken glass. She studied Abigail with an expression that gave nothing away.

“This is Mrs. Red Feather,” Blackwood said. “She keeps this place running.”
