A Giant Mastiff Protected a Homeless Girl in the Cold — The Mafia Boss Was Shocked

Chapter 2

The ceiling was too high. That was the first thing her eyes found, and the wrongness of it came in like a needle.

White plaster, a chandelier dead and dark above her, a soft lamp glow breathing at the far corner of the room. The sheets under her hands had a weight and a cleanness she had forgotten fabric could have — real warmth moving through the floor, the air smelling of lavender and nothing else. No exhaust. No wet cardboard. No strangers sleeping two benches over.

Her body knew this place was dangerous before her mind could catch up.

Cora bolted upright, heart driving against her ribs like a fist on a door, and scrambled backward until her spine met the wall. Both hands came up in front of her chest — the posture of a woman who has been knocked down enough times to know that when you open your eyes in a strange room, the first thing you protect is your face and your stomach.

The door opened. An older woman stepped in — silver hair pinned up, a white apron tied over a cardigan, eyes with fifty years of patience folded into their corners. She carried a tray with a glass of water and a folded towel. She took one look at the girl huddled against the wall, set the tray down on the table by the door without advancing, and stepped back.

“You’re safe, dear. No one’s going to hurt you here.”
